Introduction

This index was developed out of a need for a comprehensive reference guide to the accounting of monetary operations that create and delete central bank reserves and/or bank deposits. I began collecting published balance sheet representations during my research and soon realized that I had a more comprehensive compilation of balance sheet representations than I have seen anywhere else. Therefore, I decided to share my collection here on the web in the hopes that it will be helpful for others and attract collaborators to complete the collection and interpret it. To date, there are still several monetary operations that are not represented with balance sheets.

A companion project to this index is The Monetary Crosswalk, a reference table that I created to help me quickly confirm the impact of various monetary creation and deletion operations on specific balance sheets. The Monetary Crosswalk links to this index, and visa versa. The ability to crosswalk between the two has proven useful to me. I hope it does to others as well.

If you see missing or particularly good balance sheet representations during your research, or if you have suggestions for other ways to improve the index, please send them to me with their citation: [email protected]. It has been suggested (and I agree!) that it would be helpful to reformat all of these examples that I’ve pulled from multiple sources into a consistent format. If you or someone you know would be interested in taking on that project, that would be fantastic.

Thank you!

This Monetary T-Accounts Index was compiled by Sam Hummel, a graduate student at Duke University. Sam researches the impact of monetary systems on social equity and sustainability. Benjamin Whitehurst, MBA at North Carolina State University, assisted in gathering and organizing balance sheet evidence and checking Sam’s work. Sam has also been aided by dialogue with Dr. Yougui Wang and his macrofinance laboratory at Beijing Normal University. Appreciation also goes to the dozens of authors who have published the many balance sheet representations included in the index.

Sources & Their Visual Styles

You will need to recognize the source of each of the graphics below by their visual style. I did not paste in the source for each graphic because I felt they were readily identifiable by their distinct formatting. However, as the index has grown, I’m now thinking I would like to standardize the formatting of the representations, at which point I’ll reorganize and provide a citation for each.
